Liposuction

Neck Liposuction

Goal

Remove the extra fat in the neck area, which may lead to a “wattle” or neck fullness AND induce contraction of the skin to tighten the neck. A supplemental procedure called submentoplasty may be performed along with neck liposuction if the neck has prominent “neck bands” caused by sagging muscles.

Procedure

Tiny cuts, which don’t require stitches, are made beneath the earlobes and chin. A dilute numbing solution is used to fill and anesthetize the previously marked skin and fat. This procedure is referred to as the “tumescent technique.” Cannulas (delicate skinny tubes connected to a liposuction vacuum) are passed beneath the skin to remove the fat and cause new collagen deposition and contraction of the overlying skin.

Healing

A bandage is worn for 3 days. Recovery time is approximately 1 week. The skin will feel tight for many weeks as new collagen is built and swelling resolves.

Body Liposuction

Goal

An in-office fat reduction and body contouring procedure, which safely and permanently removes fat. This is the gold standard treatment for reshaping and redefining the body or improving stubborn areas of fat deposition such as the “love handles”, “muffin top”, “saddle bags” or “back fat”.

Procedure

Pain and relaxation medications are given (no general or I.V. anesthesia is required). The areas for liposuction are marked, tiny cuts (which don’t require stitches) are made in the skin, and the “tumescent” numbing solution is used to fill the skin and fat. “Tumescent liposuction” utilizes a dilute anesthetic solution, which also causes decreased bleeding, to locally anesthetize the skin and fat to be removed. Next, cannulas (skinny instruments that are connected to a liposuction vacuum) are repeatedly passed beneath the skin to evenly remove fat.

Healing

Immediate recovery time is approximately 3 days. Patients are walking around the day of the procedure. Patients will feel sore, as if they performed an intense workout. With this technique bruising is uncommon. A compression garment is worn beneath clothing for 2 weeks. Maximal improvement is noticed about 3 months after the procedure.
