May is national skin cancer and Melanoma awareness month. To bring awareness, Southern Marin Dermatology is offering free and potentially life-saving skin cancer screenings throughout May.
Melanoma is one of the deadliest forms of skin cancer, is the number one skin cancer for women in their twenties and is 99 percent preventable. Southern Marin Dermatology is offering free skin cancer screenings during the month of May with the goal of educating people about the importance of early detection and skin health. During a skin cancer screen a patient will receive a visual inspection of the skin, including moles, freckles and other marks. Screenings generally take only 15 minutes.
Free skin cancer screenings are open to patients who are uninsured or underinsured. There are limited spaces available; to reserve an appointment mention the free screening and call the Southern Marin Dermatology offices at 415.887.9758.
“While a regular skin exam by a dermatologist is the best option, you can still perform self-exams. If you find moles that are asymmetrical, have an irregular border, are larger than a pencil eraser or are evolving, multiple colors and bleeding or itching, you should schedule an appointment with your dermatologist immediately and come in for a screening,” says board certified dermatologist and fellowship-trained cosmetic surgeon Dr. Smith.
“It’s important to have regular skin exams by a physician as well as self-exams and daily sun-safe behaviors, such as applying a golf ball-sized amount of SPF 30 (or higher) sunscreen every day, wearing sun protective clothing and staying out of the sun during the hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.” says board certified dermatologist Dr. Fardin.
