In light of Rosacea awareness month, did you know approximately 16 million Americans are affected by this skin condition? A form of erythema (superficial reddening of skin caused by dilatation of the blood capillaries), Rosacea affects mainly adults and the true cause remains unknown. Many purport that it is hereditary and genetics plays a significant role. Rosacea may also produce small, red pustules, which is why it is sometimes mistaken for acne. Flare-ups may last for weeks or even months and then disappear for some time. The unpredictable nature of Rosacea makes it a challenging condition to treat.
The following can exacerbate symptoms of Rosacea:
1. Certain cosmetic products & chemical exfoliation (Glycolic acid, Lactic acid, etc.)
2. Weakened skin barrier or epidermal barrier
3. Dehydration & stress
4. Extreme sunlight or wind
5. Alcoholic beverages
6. Hot drinks or spicy foods
7. Extremes in temperature, primarily heat
At SMD, we suggest the following to help you manage your symptoms at home:
1. Use skincare replete with antioxidants such as our Super 3 Antioxidant Cream or Age Defy Restorative Cream packed with Green Tea Polyphenols
2. Incorporate Hyaluronic Acid in your skincare regimen. Try our Absolute Hydrating Serum to help restore hydration and improve skin quality.
3. Sun protection is a must. We suggest using a physical sunscreen like Zinc Oxide. Our Sheer Physical Sunscreen with Zinc Oxide is ideal for all skin types, including sensitive and problematic skin. Avoid chemical sunscreens.
4. Avoid spicy foods
5. Manage stress with yoga, meditation, and breathing
6. Drink plenty of water and stay hydrated
