The term cosmetic surgeon can be confusing and misleading.
A true cosmetic surgeon has had training in a surgical specialty, such as Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, ENT (Ear, Nose, Throat) Surgery, Oculoplastic Surgery, or Dermatology (often called a Dermatologic Surgeon). However, many doctors who do cosmetic injections call themselves cosmetic or dermatological surgeons, even without doing any additional residency or fellowship training in these specialties. It is important to research and know your surgeon’s background and training to optimize your outcomes and safety.
For example, if you are looking for a surgeon with expertise in advanced cosmetic procedures such as facelifts, eyelid surgery, or liposuction, look for someone who has extra training in that particular area. Dr. Ashley Smith, here at SMD, is an example of a dermatologic surgeon with fellowship training in cosmetic surgery. Depending on your condition, one of the following specialists might be better suited than the other for your surgical procedure:
- a dermatologist who has done fellowship training in advanced cosmetic procedures (such as a fellowship-trained dermatologic surgeon)
- a plastic surgeon who specializes in your procedure of choice (e.g. breast augmentation)
- a facial plastic surgeon (usually an ENT with extra training in facial plastic surgery), or
- an oculoplastic surgeon (an ophthalmologist who has fellowship training in plastic surgery of the eye and face).
When you’re ready to choose a cosmetic surgeon keep these points in mind:
- Choose the doctor based on education, training and experience in the specific procedure you are considering.
- Ask the doctor how often he or she performs this type of procedure.
- Review before-and-after photographs of other patients who have had the same procedure by the same doctor you are considering.
And just as important, make sure your doctor is taking the time to give you personalized care and one-on-one attention so that you feel comfortable and safe!
