The treatment is an injectable called QWO, which contains collagenase, an enzyme that breaks down and remodels collagen. In this case, collagen is the protein responsible for creating cellulite dimples.
Did you know that cellulite is more common in women than men due to differences in the way fat/connective tissue is structured? Women have connective tissue bands in the hypodermis (deepest layer of our skin) called “fibrous septae” (made primarily of collagen) that are perpendicular to the surface of our skin. These bands pull the surface down and create dimples, which can worsen over time. In men, these same bands are angled/cross-hatched (like a mesh).
When QWO is injected, the fibrous bands get broken down, and the dimples are released. The surface of the skin will appear smoother and softer.
This treatment is currently FDA-approved for cellulite treatment of the buttocks in women, and is administered as a series of injections, usually spaced 3-4 weeks apart. Results can be visible as soon as 6-12 weeks and are long-lasting as QWO targets the structural cause of cellulite. There is very little downtime after treatment, but tenderness and swelling can occur, and most patients experience bruising.
