National Healthy Skin Month | Why Skin Cancer Screening Matters
The calendar fills quickly this time of year with gatherings, travel, and plenty of things to do for everyone else. Let November be a reminder to make room for your own care, too.
In honor of National Healthy Skin Month, take a moment to check in. Are you due for a full-body skin cancer screening exam? Have you noticed a new or changing spot? Is there a skin concern you’ve been meaning to address?
Some of the spots we find during a screening are ones patients never noticed. They may be tucked away on the scalp or back, or they may be small and cause no discomfort. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, skin cancer, including melanoma, is often easier to treat when it’s found early because it can often be removed before it grows deeper into the skin or spreads.
During the exam, we look for changes such as a mole that’s grown or changed color, a shiny bump that keeps bleeding, or a sore that heals and then comes back. We also look for precancerous spots called actinic keratoses, which can feel like rough, sandpapery patches on sun-exposed areas such as the face, ears, or scalp. If a spot looks suspicious for skin cancer, we may recommend a biopsy to find out what it is.
