Many non-cancerous skin lesions and growths can be safely removed with a minor surgical procedure performed in our office. Dermatologic excision may be recommended for bothersome, enlarging, or unwanted benign growths, as well as atypical moles and some skin cancers.

While certain skin cancers are best treated with Mohs surgery, others can be effectively treated with a standard surgical excision depending on the type, size, location, and other characteristics of the lesion.

Common growths we evaluate for removal include:

Cysts and lipomas
Certain moles and atypical moles
Warts and skin tags
Other bothersome or unwanted benign growths
Certain skin cancers

What to Expect During an Excision

During an excision, the treatment area is numbed with local anesthesia before the lesion is carefully removed. Depending on the diagnosis, a margin of normal tissue extending beyond the lesion may be removed to ensure complete removal. The skin is typically closed with sutures, and your care team will provide instructions for wound care and healing. Depending on the diagnosis and type of procedure, removed tissue may also be sent to a laboratory for examination.

Medical vs. Cosmetic Removal

Some removals are considered medically necessary, while others may be considered cosmetic, which can affect insurance coverage. Your SMD provider will discuss the recommended treatment, what to expect from the procedure and recovery, and any applicable insurance or out-of-pocket considerations before treatment.
